WILL GUNNELL – WHY I WROTE “YOU’RE COMING HOME WITH ME TONIGHT” & PERSONAL BIO
I was inspired to write "You're Coming Home With Me Tonight" because I had never heard a song written from the victims point of view. We always hear from the outsiders and how they were affected, but the unfortunate ones on the inside who fell lost their voices and can't tell us what they experienced. It was my intention to write a song that takes the listener on a journey with one of the many victims and hopefully bring some comfort to the families and friends knowing that the terror didn't last, they were never alone, and there is something better to come. Also this song is a call to action to make a change against assault style weapons in the wrong hands. We always hear the statement "our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families" but little action seems to happen. Thinking and praying is absolutely essential but until we all move to action, nothing will change.
I’ve been happily married for 29 years to my beautiful wife Darlene. She and I are both therapy assistants, I am in Occupational Therapy and she’s in Physical Therapy. We live in Ringgold, VA outside Danville. We have four handsome boys all who are involved in music, one is a special needs child we adopted from Haiti.
I have been involved in music long as I can remember but my “professional” career began at age 13 playing drums with a country group. I have played with many groups, the most successful being a Contemporary Christian group where I wrote, produced, and recorded most of the music and played regionally in the eastern US. I have also been a radio personality on a local Christian station and country station.
Eventually we built our own studio where I made my own demos, and recorded and produced other artists. I sent a CD to Gus at Winner’s Circle Country Music Publishing in TX, and he published my songs, and I've been with him ever since. He has always been very active in pitching my songs and I landed 3 more indie cuts through him. I have had over 50 cuts so far through WCCMP and through co-writes with artists I've recorded.
Having children in school myself, I worry if it will ever happen in my hometown. As we've seen, it can happen anywhere, anytime. This song serves as an inspiration to all to stand and be active to protect not only our children but everyone from senseless violence.
WASHINGTON POST REPORTS THAT AT LEAST 153,000
STUDENTS HAVE EXPERIENCED A SCHOOL SHOOTING SINCE 1999
“According to an analysis conducted by the Washington Post earlier this month (February, 2018), more than 150,000 Americans have experienced a shooting on campus since Columbine in 1999. After Wednesday’s rampage at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, you can add 3,000 more kids to that list”.
The Washington Post analysis, as maintained by Sarah Tofte, Everytown's Research Director, indicates that at least 170 primary/secondary schools have experienced a shooting event since Columbine in 1999.
From our view, if you look at 153,000 kids, you must also consider the impact of the shootings on the parents, friends, neighbors, relatives, church members, etc. The real number of people affected has got to be staggering.
Will & Darlene Gunnell, and Gus & Lisa Wolman agree that AR-15 assault rifles should be owned and used ONLY by our military and police. We also agree that complete background checks should be in place to monitor high probability problems, such as criminals and mentally ill that apply for gun licenses.
